Polyaspartic Coatings: Thinking Outside the (Garage) Box

Lake House Polyaspartic Coating Installation

Polyaspartic coatings aren't just for the garage — discover what makes polyaspartic ideal for interior and exterior coatings!

When you think about concrete floor coatings, like most people, you probably think of coating your garage floor with some sort of epoxy, polyurea or polyaspartic material. It’s a common practice that can turn just about any dark, dirty garage into a bright and airy showroom almost overnight. (Though certain methods are better than others. More on that later…)

But you may have concrete surfaces in more places in your home than just your garage. Maybe a basement, laundry room, art studio or mudroom. Or maybe an exterior space such as a patio, walkway or pool deck. Or maybe you’re a small business owner with a commercial kitchen, workshop, locker room or bathroom in need of beautifying.

Whatever the case, it’s time to think outside the (garage) box when it comes to concrete surface coating. But not all coatings are the same, especially when it comes to surfaces that get prolonged exposure to the sun.

Why Polyaspartic Rules Them All

Concrete coating for home business

Polyaspartic provides a durable surface for a busy home business.

Of the three main floor coating options, epoxy, polyurea and polyaspartic, only one offers the elusive combination of good looks, high durability and UV resistance: polyaspartic.

Epoxy floor coatings can look good initially. But because they don’t adhere well to the concrete below and tend to be very hard and brittle when they cure, they tend to peel and flake after just a few years of use. Plus, epoxies aren’t UV-resistant, so they’ll fade and yellow as they’re exposed to the sun’s rays.

Polyureas are better than epoxies because they adhere better and are less rigid when they dry. But they’re not without their problems either. They cure extremely fast, which means they’re difficult to apply and tend to form a weaker bond with the concrete below. Like epoxy coatings, polyureas are not UV-resistant and will yellow over time.

Then there’s polyaspartic, which is a type of polyurea that’s been modified to do two things:

  1. Cure slower so it has the time to bond with concrete
  2. Resist UV degradation, so it won’t fade or yellow.

So, polyaspartic is definitely the way to go if you want a concrete coating that will look great year after year. But what can it coat besides garage floors?

Interior Floor Coatings

If you’ve got an unfinished basement, you likely have an untreated concrete slab that’s dark, stained and maybe even cracked in places.

The first big step you can make in turning your basement into a party room, man cave or family room is to upgrade the floor. But instead of wall-to-wall carpeting that looks generic and is susceptible to spills and stains, a polyaspartic floor coating will totally transform your basement into a bright, welcoming space that’s easy to clean and looks amazing.

A polyaspartic concrete floor coating is also ideal if you’ve got a laundry room that needs an upgrade. It’s waterproof and cleans up with just a quick wipe of a rag, so it can take just about anything you and your family can throw at it.

Exterior Coatings

OK, but what if you want to transform an exterior space like a patio or pool deck? Polyaspartic is your go-to answer here, too.

As we mentioned above, polyaspartic coatings are super-durable and long-lasting, so they’re great for high-traffic exterior surfaces. But it’s their UV resistance that really makes them shine — literally — in these applications.

After a polyaspartic transformation, a run-of-the-mill patio suddenly looks like something posted by an Instagram influencer. Only instead of just being just for show, it’s actually practical and usable.

Commercial Coatings

You can probably see where this is going… Polyaspartic coatings are super durable and long-lasting, making them ideal for commercial applications like kitchens, locker rooms, shop floors, etc. In fact, polyaspartic coatings have been used in industrial settings like airplane hangars and factories for decades.

So, if you’re trying to get ideas for how to spruce up your basement, patio, pool deck or other concrete surface (think: wine cellar, sun room, utility closet, home gym, greenhouse... the possibilities are endless), you may just be the ideal candidate for a garage floor coating — even if you don’t have a garage!

Locker room moisture, sports equipment and daily wear and tear are no match for a high-performance polyaspartic coating.
